Navigating Milwaukee: RNC Brings Major Transportation Changes to Downtown
MILWAUKEE, Wis (Civic Media) — The Republican National Convention is set to bring significant traffic disruptions to downtown Milwaukee next week, with multiple road closures and parking restrictions in effect.
The security zone for the convention is centered around Fiserv Forum, UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena, and the Baird Center. While the area remains drivable for now, portions will become a credential-based, pedestrian-only “hard zone” as the convention approaches.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced several major closures, including the Hoan Bridge (I-794) from Sunday morning, July 14, to Monday morning, July 15. The McKinley Avenue and Fond du Lac Avenue ramps, the I-794 eastbound ramp to James Lovell Street, and the Kilbourn Avenue Tunnels will all be closed during the convention week.
Parking restrictions have been implemented in downtown Milwaukee, marked by red bags covering meters near convention venues. These restrictions will remain in place through July 20. Violations carry a $150 fine and the risk of towing.
Additional parking restrictions will affect the eastern portion of the Historic Third Ward from July 11 to July 16 to accommodate the delegate welcome party at Henry Maier Festival Park. The blocks surrounding the Pfister Hotel will also see restrictions from July 12 to July 21, potentially indicating the presence of a significant guest.
The Milwaukee Downtown Division of Motor Vehicle service center will be closed from July 15 to July 19, though online services will remain available.
Despite these disruptions, downtown Milwaukee remains open for business. However, officials recommend using alternative transportation methods such as bicycles or public transit to navigate the area during the convention.
Visitors should also be aware of additional street closures today due to the Bastille Days festival and its associated 5K race centered around Cathedral Square Park.
