Now that the new year is underway many individuals are working hard at honoring a New Year’s Resolution they made. A common resolution is to lose weight and get fit, which is usually done at a gym or a fitness center. Before becoming a member at a fitness facility be cautious to avoid being scammed. Michelle Reinen is with The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP).

New membership offers might look like a great deal but make sure you are not paying too much during the length of your contract.

Be sure to take precautions in the event the gym or fitness center struggles and closes.

Michelle Reinen says that there might be a chance a new owner may honor your contract.

To verify the facilities proof of financial liability, or to report a scam, you contact DATCP’s Consumer Protection Hotline by phone at 1-800-422-7128 or by email at [email protected].
