Extra security at Wisconsin Capitol Tuesday after Minnesota shootings

MADISON, Wis. (CIVIC MEDIA) – There’s extra security at the state Capitol Tuesday after the Minnesota political shootings. 

Vance Boelter is accused of shooting and killing Minnesota’s most powerful Democrat in the House, Rep. Melissa Hortman, and her husband early Saturday morning. Officials say he shot Minnesota State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, who have undergone surgery. 

Boelter reportedly had a manifesto and “hit list” with dozens of Democratic lawmakers on it. That includes 11 of them here in Wisconsin. 

“I am aware of who’s on the list,” State Sen. Kelda Roys (D-Madison) told Civic Media’s Todd Albaugh. “Anyone who serves the public could potentially be at risk like this. And it’s not acceptable. Nobody deserves to put their life at risk because of the job that they have.” 

Boelter was caught Sunday night, and is now charged with two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. 

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has requested extra security at the Capitol for Tuesday’s budget hearings. The Joint Finance Committee will be discussing funding for the UW System, which was a point of contention between Republican leader and Governor Tony Evers.
