OSHKOSH, WI – (WISS) – Enrollment at the Universities of Wisconsin (UWs) this fall increased by more than 1,000 students overall according to preliminary estimates based on first-day student counts. This includes an almost 5% decrease in the number of students enrolled at UW-Oshkosh (UWO).

UW-Oshkosh (UWO) saw a decrease of 651 enrollments from last year. Preliminary enrollment figures show UWO with 13,127 students. In 2023, UWO’s 10-day enrollment figures were 13,778.

In a press release, UW President Jay Rothman said the overall increase comes even though there were severe challenges caused by the rollout of a new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) financial aid form, a lack of funding for the Wisconsin Tuition Promise, and closed campuses.

“The fact that overall enrollment is up at the UWs despite the federal FAFSA fiasco is proof positive that Wisconsinites know that education unlocks opportunities,” Rothman said.

The overall enrollment estimate of 163,589 is the highest since 2020.

Headcount enrollment is up by 1,058 students, according to the preliminary estimates, reflecting increases at UW-Eau Claire, UW-Green Bay, UW-La Crosse, UW-Madison, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior, and UW-Whitewater with declines noted at other system universities.

Official enrollment counts will be released later this fall based on the 10th day of enrollment.
