Green Bay City Council clears way for stadium renovation

GREEN BAY, WI – (WGBW) – The Green Bay City Council cleared the way for continued stadium renovation at Green Bay West High.  It also approved an ordinance to allow fermented beverages to be sold at Green Bay-owned public parks during its meeting Tuesday night.

Crews halted construction at Green Bay West High School’s new stadium when plans to push bleachers back ran into a cellphone tower, literally. The cell tower, leased by the city to a cell tower company, would have cost a million dollars to move. Instead, the Green Bay Area Public Schools District decided to move the tower’s equipment under the bleachers. 

Moving that equipment required the cell tower company to renegotiate the lease with the city,. That cost the city $155,000 in lost revenue. Green Bay Parks Director Dan Ditscheit said the school district agreed to pay $100,000 of the lost income.

“We did have discussions with the school district. They have indicated that they would commit up to $100,000 towards that lost revenue,” said Ditscheit. “And my understanding is that would be a lump sum check right at the beginning. They’re hoping that that’s a good compromise.” 

Tuesday night, the Green Bay City Council voted to approve the new lease agreement. It will also accept payment from the Green Bay Area School District to buy out the old lease. The city will absorb $55,000 of the lost revenue.

Renovations at the Del Marcelle Stadium at Green Bay West can now move forward.

Alcohol sales at Green Bay-operated parks

The Green Bay City Council approved a new ordinance Tuesday to allow city employees to sell fermented malt beverages like beer at city parks. No other alcohol or intoxicants can be sold by the City of Green Bay, its officials, and employees. 

The beverages must be in unbreakable containers. Glass containers will not be permitted.

The passage of this ordinance will allow employees at Bay Beach and other city-owned parks to sell beer in aluminum cans.
