GREEN BAY, WI- (WGBW) –  The Green Bay Police Department (GBPD) reports a 1.58 percent reduction in overall reported offenses in 2024. They says there was a significant decrease in property crime and fewer crimes against society in 2024. Crime against persons, however, rose dramatically.

“We are making steady progress in the right direction. While we recognize there is still much work to be done, the decrease in overall crime serves as a clear testament to the dedication of Green Bay Police Department’s sworn and professional staff, along with those who proudly represent our community and work to improve it,” said Green Bay Police Chief Chris Davis in a press release.

By the Numbers

Last year, the GBPD recorded 6,308 case reports down from 6,409 in 2023.

The largest decrease came from reported property crimes, which dropped nearly 11% in 2024. There were 2,809 reported cases compared to the previous year’s 3,155. This is the lowest number of known cases in the last 10 years. The decreased offenses include arson, burglary, robbery, shoplifting, motor vehicle thefts, and theft from a motor vehicle.

Reports of crimes against society dropped just over 1% in 2024. There were 1,767 compared to 1,788 in 2023 because of lesser-known drug violations and prostitution.

Meanwhile, GBPD found a rise in crimes against persons of around 18% in 2024. There were 1,732 reported cases compared to 1,466 in 2023. Some of the offenses that lead to this increase include aggravated assault, simple assault, and kidnapping/abduction. GBPD said those types of calls can sometimes be linked to domestic violence incidents where one person is prevented from leaving..

Homicides decreased by almost 67%. Only two homicides were identified in 2024 compared to six the year prior.

Also, GBPD recorded 24 known shots fired cases in 2024, nearly 37% less than in 2023, which had 38.

In tracking overdoses, numbers indicate an overall decrease of more than 63%, with 68 in 2024 compared to 185 in 2023.

The GBPD submits these numbers to the Wisconsin Incident-Based Reporting System or WIBRS.
