OSHKOSH, Wis. (WISS) – It started with a group of students in the Communities Program at Oshkosh North High School. They wanted to learn more about veterans who have served their country and the service programs that support them afterward.

It wrapped up with “Sweat for a Vet.” Over 85 community members at the Frank Schade Field House ran the gauntlet of a cross-fit style workout

Gina Munig, a Leadership Teacher in the Communities Program at Oshkosh North, said the students raised enough money to send at least eight veterans on a Northeast Wisconsin Old Glory Honor Flight.

“When you add our sponsorship donations and our participant registration, we’re looking at close to $4,000.” Munig added, “Eight vets right now for sure, we are sending. And we’re hoping that those numbers still increase because we know we have some onsite registration this morning. And some more donations still coming in.”

Munig said that as of 5:55 this morning, there were 87 people who registered to participate, and that number may change when on-site registrations are added up.

“We have a lot of students, a lot of student athletes. We have a few veterans out there this morning. And we also have some members of Fire Fitness that chose to come here this morning instead of going to their usual spot,” Munig said.

“Sweat for a Vet” not only raised money for veterans but also served as a learning opportunity for the juniors and seniors at Oshkosh North.

“ I would just like to thank all the veterans that have come into our classrooms to teach us about the Veteran Service organizations, how important this work is to them,” said Munig. “And just the fact that we really are making a difference in the lives of veterans.”

The Northeast Wisconsin Chapter of the Old Glory Honor Flight has flown 78 missions. Each mission sends about 100 veterans to the nation’s capital. It costs approximately $500 per person to send a veteran to Washington, D.C.
