Go! You Packers Go!

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WGBW) – As playoff fever hits Titletown, we’re hearing a lot of it these days: the quintessential football cheer, “Go Pack Go.” Our beloved Packers chant has evolved into one of the most iconic fan cheers in professional sports.

While it may be tough to find anyone who doesn’t know “Go Pack Go,” do you know where that simple cheer came from? It’s actually a shortened version of the original Packers fight song titled “Go! You Packers Go!”

Did you know the Packers had a fight song? In fact, “Go! You Packers Go!” is recognized as one of the oldest and first fight songs in professional football.

It was first played at a Packers game in 1931 by the Lumberjack Band. The song shows its age—not only in colorful lyrics about “fightin’ fools” and “bringing the bacon back to old Green Bay,” but also in the reference to the Packers’ original team colors, “fight on, you blue and gold, to glory.” The Packers’ navy blue and gold uniforms were a nod to Curly Lambeau’s alma mater, Notre Dame.

Although not as recognizable nowadays as the chant “Go Pack Go,” you’ll still hear the Packers’ original fight song being played by musicians roaming among the tailgaters at Lambeau before home games. You can find countless versions on YouTube, including one the Packers themselves recorded in 1960 featuring Bart Starr giving the intro to the song.
