An urban myth has resurfaced recently that the Packers iconic G stands for greatness, not Green Bay, which some say is why the Packers don’t have a G-B on their helmets, just the G. It’s a good theory, but not actually true. The G does, in fact, stand for Green Bay. Prior to Super Bowl XLV, former NFL running back Tiki Barber concocted a story on Media Day about how the G stood for greatness. Although completely unfounded, the story spread like wildfire on the web and has been a popular internet myth since 2011. The Packer G does have an interesting story behind it, though. It first appeared in 1961 under coach Vince Lombardi, which makes the greatness theory plausible. Lombardi was all about greatness.  However, at the time NFL teams were getting logos on their helmets, Lombardi had bigger things on his plate to worry about… like, winning the first of his five world championships, for example. So, he assigned the task of coming up with a logo to a Packers intern at the time who was also an art student at St. Norbert College in De Pere. Lombardi asked the kid to come up with a G in the shape of a football. The iconic Packers G was the result and has stayed pretty much the same for more than a half century.
